... But It was a Beginning

I am a huge fan of the Wheel of Time series. So to get ready for the final book I am going to be rereading the series and posting my thoughts. Also look for my thoughts on The Hobbit before the end of the week.

"The Problem is Choice"

So after a painful marathon of a conversation I think the Fiancee and I are on the same page...maybe. But the real test is whether or not I do something to loss the remaining support of my parents now that I am home on break. I'll see how much they like it when I say that yes we are having a Catholic wedding, no you can't come.

On the admission front, I am going to try and play the two schools off each other and see if either of them sweetens the deal. and I am waiting on a decision from U of Kentucky and Mizzou Law and will hopefully hear from them before Christmas.

A wedding and my funeral

So, when they (they being the nebulous internet) say when someone wants to blog is to just start writing to this is what I'm doing. This will be the third restart of the blog and now it will serve to just keep me from going crazy in the echo chamber of my head as I prepare for law school in August and a wedding in July.

The law school pressure is not so much worrying if I will get in. I've already been accepted at two Tier Two schools. What is the problem is convincing the fiancee to start applying for teaching positions in the cities where the schools are, If she gets a position where I've already been accepted that would make the decision for me, regardless of what scholarship I would be getting.

The issue of the wedding is one of location and religion, mainly that location which already has a deposit paid for; cannot have a Catholic ceremony preformed at it. The whole crux of this is that her parents are not Catholic and one set of grandparents is not accepting of my Catholicism or the fiancee's conversion to Catholicism. So my parents are will be mad if we have a convalidation, and her parents will be mad for excluding her extending family because of a Catholic ceremony, us changing plans or for us running off.

Really the idea of running off is looking better and better and I just need to convince her that it is the best option.

Things I've Always Wondered

In order to gain the label of child proof, do manufactures give the bottle to a child and see if they can open in it, like firing a proof load in gun?

You Know You're a College Student When...

You know you're a college student with some sort of econ, when you start doing utility analysis on whether you should continue to nap or not.

RQoJ

"I'm about as far from gangster as you can get without being Asian."

Catching up

Well quiet a bit has happened since I lasted posted. I have finished my first year of college and started my second. I'm finding that there are things in class that I want to comment but lack a sounding board to really talk about it. So instead of sitting in my room and talk to myself like a crazy person, I'll talk to the internet, where I am extremely sane by comparison.

I'm going to be going back to the title of blog, expect anything and everything to commented on. You have been warned.

Dead Snow

So I saw this movie on Netflicks and could not pass it up. I mean come on, Nazi's and Zombies. I enjoyed it but be forewarned this movie is not for the weak of stomach. There is gore aplenty. SPOILER: The happy ending rug gets pulled out on you at the very end. Defiantly recommended to fans of zombie movie.

4 severed heads out of 5.

Olympics

Well it's official, the Olympics has finally started for me. Curling has begun!!! To me curling is the quintessential Olympic sport, its obscure and never televised outside of the Olympics. I have know idea why I like curling for this but this sport symbolizes the Olympics for me.

In other news, DnD is quiet possible the most fun you can have sitting down. The overarching campaign hook has been set but maybe we'll take this off the tracks.

First Times

Now out in the real world I am a fairly laid back, go with the flow kind of guy. Not so much conflict avoidant, more of if conflict doesn't come find me, I'm not going to look for conflict. So with that mentality I have managed to avoid being punched in face for my entire life, until last night.

Last night I put on gloves and did some boxing with my friend, and damn if I didn't get my bell rung a time or two, but I enjoyed it, which is weird for someone who never really fought in his entire life. So next Friday I intend to have the snot beat out of me (Which would probably help with the sinus headaches) in attempt to learn how to fight

Econ GRRRRR....

Well Econ and International Relations aren't too bad, however figuring out how to find elasticity cost me me quiet a few points on an assignment, hopefully this won't bite me in the ass come Tuesday.

I think I found my rhythm for the weekends that don't have rugby, Friday and Saturday, hang out at Newman, Sunday do homework. Seems like a good deal. I'm starting to play D&D next Saturday, post my thoughts on the game afterward.

Ass Kicked

Got seriously worn out by the first rugby practice of the semester. Taking a month off is not good for your cardio. So there will be a major focus on getting into better shape this semester, my goal is to work out and/or be at rugby practice 4-5 times a week, and hopefully I won't want to go bed after a rugby practice.

In other news my two 5 hour classes don't seem that bad i'm just going to have to be sure to put in the time for them. Econ will be interesting and Calculus doesn't seem to bad. Now just Military Science and International Relations to test out.

Returned

I made it back to K-Ville, a friend was kind enough to give me a lift after my normal ride fell through. As usual I left something at home, this time it was my electric toothbrush, no worries though, I have a spare up here, and I am going back to the O-town this weekend to gather more clothes, hangers and yes my electric toothbrush, and enjoy the wicked sweet new computer that Dad got. Well class is in the morning at 8:30 so I shall see what my daily professors will be like.

A New Semester

Well I go back to K-ville on Sunday, and it is even colder there then here in St. Louis. The weather here has been WTF, I have never seen it this cold.

Expect a lot of bitching about college, and maybe a few crazy stories, as the announcer's say on TV "the second half comes your way right after this"

Classes right now are Econ, 5 hours of Calculus (God I want to shoot myself already), International Relations, and Military Science 101.

My goal is to treat college like an 8-5 job and always be working during then and hopefully not have to do class work outside of that time frame. I'm also going to try and write everyday, maybe not a post but at least write of this blog. Will see how this all turns out

This I Believe

This past summer I took up the game of golf. Over the summer my golf game improved. Now it wasn't that my swing improved dramatically, or I mastered the one-putt, what improved was how I managed the misses I knew would happen. Instead of a great shot followed by a series of shots that would make even Tiger Woods consider giving up the game, a series of average shots, not too daring but not too lackluster turned out to garner the best result. While this is the safe route that I’m sure golf ball manufacturers are glad few people take, it is not the strategy that I believe I should live by.

I believe that attempting those great shots is something that I should strive for; I also believe that I need to be ready to lay up out of the rough when the shot goes awry as it does so often. Or to put it another way: life is not a series of successes; life is a series of setbacks disappointments, and potential opportunities. It is through the management and overcoming of these setbacks that we become stronger individuals.

My later elementary and early middle schools years were marked with this management of setbacks and disappointments. Finding out that I was ahead in math and pushed forward to the next grade level was a huge success for me, but finding out that what I had done when teaching myself was wrong and having to relearn concepts proved to be a real challenge for me. Moving back to the St. Louis area after two years of my father not finding a job in Phoenix, disappointment to him and affected the whole family.

While I at the time I hated the fact that my father had wasted two years of my life, looking back I have to admire my father for the decision that he made. Not only did he essentially move us back home, he went back to the company he left. He set his pride aside and hit out on the fairway of life and still made the green in regulation.

What I believe, is that taking a moment to recover from a setback is not admitting failure but the smart play that may present opportunities you never knew existed.

Things overheard on the Television

Putzing around on my laptop in front of the tv I overheard a commercial saying "Mercury is good for the environment," or something like that. It took a confused moment before I realized that the commercial was about the car company. D'oh

movie realism

So I started watching The Green Berets with John Wayne and I just could suspended my disbelief. You know why?

A bunch of damn pine trees in the middle of Vietnam, I just don't think so.

I have devined a secert from the universe

or rather several, barbers are not mind readers forget this at your own peril.

And my golden nugget of knowledge (I like that alliteration) is God gave man golf to teach him patience. I played nine today, and even with having three snowmans and three sevens, still managed to enjoy myself. You have to take positives away from everything you do or golf (much like life) becomes a string of unenjoyable disappointments or "oh I could have done that better". Well guess what saying that doesn't get the ball out of the rough so get up there clear your mind of the past and take another swing.
